Foundation Grant Promotes Literacy

Fran Moran from Lucy Franklin Elementary School received a foundation grant for innovative teaching. Fran used the money to implement literacy stations for her fifth grade classroom this year. The foundation grant made it possible for her to purchase equipment and supplies for her to create stations in the classroom to promote literacy. Fran made stations for writing, spelling, word study, and grammar. She said, ” I would encourage anyone who has a project idea to write a district grant.”

High Interest Materials Motivate At-Risk Readers

Kimberly Storey, teacher from Cordill Mason Elementary School said, “With the grant I was able to provide special high interest literature with lower reading levels. These resources helped to captivate even my most reluctant ‘at risk’ readers by getting them involved in complex concepts and ideas and by helping them gain the appreciation it takes to become lifelong readers.”

Middle School Students Helped by Foundation Funds

“The grant funds allowed me to purchase 8 memory speed-challenge games for my keyboarding students,” said Mrs. Heidi Jerman, teacher at Brittany Hill Middle School. The games add variety and competitive fun while increasing proficiency levels for her students. Mrs. Jerman was the recipient of an Innovative Classroom grant funded by the Blue Springs Education Foundation.
